The first step in moving your site from WordPress.com to self-hosted WordPress is to sign up for hosting. Whether you’re taking the DIY option, or using our VIP Transfer service, you’ll need to complete this step yourself. We’ve created very detailed steps and screenshots to make sure this process is as straightforward and easy as possible.
SiteGround is our preferred hosting partner, for many reasons, and we’re not the only ones who think SiteGround is the best host. Besides their incredible server speed, tons of cPanel tools, and free SSL certificates, their customer service and live chat support is one of the best in the industry.
Go to SiteGround’s WordPress hosting page and choose your plan. Click on GET PLAN for the plan of you choice. You can get started on any plan and upgrade later if you wish. All the plans will have similar features already included in your current WordPress.com plan, so any will work.
Since you already have your domain name (either registered with WordPress.com or another registrar), check the I already have a Domain option and enter your domain name, then click on Proceed.
If you don’t already have a domain name registered anywhere (for example, you were on the WordPress.com free plan, then you’ll need to select the option to register a new domain name as the free WordPress.com domain cannot be used outside of WordPress.com. In this case, select the Register a New Domain option and enter a domain name you’d like to use, and then click on Proceed.
Now you’ll want to go ahead and fill out your personal and payment details and create an account. Note, if you’re planning on using our VIP Transfer service for moving your site instead of the DIY option, we’ll need your account login details for SiteGround, so be sure to use a temporary password so you can change this later after we complete the transfer of your site. Don’t worry, your payment details are hidden in SiteGround’s dashboard, so we won’t be able to see those when we log into your account.
Now you’ll want to select the Period of the hosting contract with SiteGround. Our recommendation is to go with the longest period offered as this represents the best value. Also check the box to agree to their terms of service and any other options you would like to add, and click the PAY NOW button to check out.
If successful, you should see a success message, and can continue to the Customer Area of your SiteGround account. Click on PROCEED TO CUSTOMER AREA.
We’ll either be showing you how to setup your site in the next step (DIY option), or we’ll be doing it for you (VIP Transfer Option), so select the Don’t need help now option, and click on Confirm.
Now you’ll need to confirm the service terms again by selecting the “I confirm that I have…” checkbox, and then click on Complete Setup.
And that’s it! If you’re doing this yourself (DIY option), proceed to the next step which is installing WordPress. If you’re letting us do it, you can send your SiteGround log in details through this secure form, and after we’ve confirmed receipt of your payment, we’ll advise you on the next steps.
